ive been wanting to do a before and after progress meme type thing, and when my pc took a shit last month, i went through my old stuff and found the one on the left. ive hated it since i drew it; the pastel colors and the one sided circle thing in the middle really bothered me. i spent quite a few hours drawing the one on the right, and am much more satisfied with the outcome, even if it is still a bit sloppy. so really, after 10 years, all i have to show for it is better flames, and not AS sloppy outlines.
It's good. In my humble opinion, there should be some red in the 2012 version, though. There is a lot of evidence of growth. 2012 seems to have much more balance in structure and color, and more forethought.
You should keep re-doing old sketches and doodles so as to keep track of how your artistic skills are developing. You'll surprise yourself quite a bit.
Keep in mind also that your state of mind may have been very different at the time of the first drawing. It seems less planned out, so you can't be too hard on yourself for what you put out.
Globaly at first look, countless of black and white, flashing yellow and green give a better visual impact. After that, first details who poped to my eyes are the flames curves, obviously more fine and precise, from theirs shapes to their strokes. I can't forget the big flames at middle, top, right, bottom and left. They globally give a good mix of cross and circle shapes, that way, the right one is more stable. Don't know if it's really better, but my eyes usually prefer stable shapes. I won't go so long on center circles. It is obvious that the right one's details are far more advanced and controled. We have just to (try to) visually count them. Same than the flames, the four circles centers positionned that way bring stablilty to the artwork when colors bring visual vibration. The only thing i dislike in the right one is probably the thickness of all these black strokes in the middle circle. Thick variations should have bring more vibrations by color contrast.
What i will say as my conclusion is than skills on the right one are clearly more advanced than the left one, at my opinion.
